A Multi-stakeholder Evaluation of Strategic Slot Allocation Schemes under Airline Frequency Competition

چکیده

In addition to the increasing passenger demand, airline frequency competition is another reason for the growing demand for airport resources. By providing more flight frequency, an airline attracts more passengers. As a result, demand for flight operations often exceeds capacity at congested airports, resulting in delays and disruptions. At some congested airports, the limited airport capacity is allocated between different airlines using administrative slot controls. At a slot controlled airport, (a) the total number of allocated slots, and (b) the distribution of slots across different airlines, together determine the effectiveness of any slot control strategy. We propose a game-theoretic model of airline frequency competition under administrative slot controls. The model is based on the popular S-shaped relationship between market share and frequency share of an airline. The model is solved for a Nash equilibrium and the model predictions are validated against actual frequency data, with the results indicating a good fit. We describe two different schemes for distributing the available slots among different airlines. We evaluate the impact of varying the total number of allocated slots on the airlines and the passengers. The results from a case-study at the New York LaGuardia (LGA) airport suggest that a small reduction in the total number of allocated slots translates into a substantial reduction in flight and passenger delays, and a considerable improvement in airlines’ profits. Modeling Airline Frequency Competition for Airport Congestion Mitigation

Demand often exceeds capacity at the congested airports. Airline frequency competition is partially responsible for the growing demand for airport resources. We propose a game-theoretic model for airline frequency competition under slot constraints. The model is solved to obtain a Nash equilibrium using a successive optimizations approach, wherein individual optimizations are performed using a ...

The Role of Airline Frequency Competition in Airport Congestion Pricing

Airport congestion pricing has often been advocated as a means of controlling demand for airport operations and for achieving efficient resource allocation. Competition between airlines affects the extent to which an airline would be willing to pay for airport slots. Accurate modeling of competition is critical in order to determine the effectiveness of a congestion pricing mechanism. We develo...

Joint optimization of pricing and capacity allocation for two competitive airlines under demand uncertainty

Nowadays, airline industries should overcome different barriers regarding the fierce competition and changing consumer behavior. Thus, they attempt to focus on joint decision making which enables them to set pricing and capacity allocation to maximize their profits. In this research, we develop a model to optimize pricing and capacity allocation in a duopoly of single-flight leg for two competi...

Price of Airline Frequency Competition

Frequency competition influences capacity allocation decisions in airline markets and has important implications to airline profitability and airport congestion. Market share of a competing airline is a function of its frequency share and the relationship between the two is pivotal for understanding the impacts of frequency competition on airline business. Based on the most commonly accepted fo...

Mitigating Airport Congestion: Market Mechanisms and Airline Response Models

Efficient allocation of scarce resources in networks is an important problem worldwide. In this thesis, we focus on resource allocation problems in a network of congested airports. The increasing demand for access to the world’s major commercial airports combined with the limited operational capacity at many of these airports have led to growing air traffic congestion resulting in several billi...
